If you have been shopping for sarees online, you must have seen the words "lichi silk" everywhere. So what exactly is it? In simple words, lichi silk is the market name for a soft, smooth woven saree fabric with a gentle shine, usually decorated with small zari motifs and a rich pallu. At Zeraine, our lichi sarees are art silk (man-made silk) jacquard, woven in Surat – and every saree in this guide is ₹899.
What is lichi silk, really?
"Lichi silk" is not a special type of pure silk. It is a name used in saree shops and online stores for a style of woven saree – smooth fabric, a light sheen, and a pattern made right in the weave (jacquard), not printed on top. Most lichi sarees in this price range are made from man-made fibres, and ours are art silk. The good news: art silk is easier to look after and much kinder on the budget.
A typical lichi saree has three parts:
- Body with butti – small repeated motifs woven in gold-tone zari. "Pokiya butti" means these small round buttis spread across the saree.
- Zari border – a wider woven border, often with a vine or paisley pattern.
- Rich pallu – the pallu usually has zari stripes or a contrast colour, so it looks grand when you drape it over your shoulder.
Lichi-style vs other festive sarees
Compared to Paithani-style or Kanjivaram-style sarees, lichi sarees have a simpler look – small buttis instead of big peacock motifs or temple borders. So they work for many occasions: a family puja, a haldi, a kitty party or a wedding.

Styling tips for lichi sarees
- Pick the blouse from the pallu. The easiest trick: match your blouse to the pallu or border colour, not the body. A rama blue saree with a rani pink blouse, or a bottle green saree with a pink blouse, looks instantly festive.
- Let the pallu show. The striped zari pallu is the best part, so try an open pallu or a neat pleated pallu pinned at the shoulder so it falls nicely in photos.
- Pleat with care. Smooth art silk can slip, so use 2–3 safety pins at the pleats and shoulder for an all-day neat drape.
Caring for your lichi art silk saree
- Dry clean for the first wash, or gently hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent. Do not soak for long and do not wring.
- Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, so colours stay bright.
- Iron on low heat from the reverse side, and avoid pressing hard on the zari.
