A Paithani-style saree is easy to spot: a bright body colour, a wide contrast border and a zari pallu with peacocks or flowers. At Zeraine, our Paithani-style sarees are art silk (man-made silk) jacquard sarees woven in Surat, priced at ₹1,099 to ₹1,299 with free shipping across India. Here is a simple guide to the look, and 7 of our favourite pieces.
What is a Paithani saree, and what does "Paithani-style" mean?
The original Paithani saree comes from the town of Paithan in Maharashtra. It is a traditional silk saree, famous for its peacock (mor) and lotus motifs, its rich zari pallu and its contrast borders. In many Maharashtrian homes, it is the saree for weddings, Diwali, Padwa and other big family days.
A Paithani-style saree borrows this look: the same kind of colour blocking, contrast border and motif-filled pallu, but made in a different fabric and at a much lower price. Our sarees are art silk jacquard, which means the design is woven into the fabric on a jacquard machine, not printed on top. They are machine-woven art silk, and we will always tell you that clearly.
How to spot the Paithani look
- Contrast border: green with pink, purple with red, blue with teal. The border colour is different from the body.
- Peacock or flower pallu: the pallu has bigger woven motifs, often peacocks, lotus flowers or vines.
- Small buttis on the body: tiny zari dots or flowers spread over the saree.
- Bold, festive colours: parrot green, rani pink, purple, mustard and blue are the classic choices.

Styling tips for a Paithani-style saree
- Blouse: pick the border colour for the blouse (for example, a teal blouse with the gold saree, or pink with bottle green). This is the easiest way to get the traditional look.
- Jewellery: a nath (nose ring), green glass bangles, a short gold-tone necklace and jhumkas go perfectly with this style.
- Draping: keep the pleats neat and let the pallu fall open so the peacock or flower design shows. A few safety pins on the shoulder will hold it in place all day.
- Hair: a simple bun with a gajra finishes the look for pujas and family functions.
- Care: dry clean the first time, or gently hand wash in cold water with mild soap. Dry in shade and iron on low heat from the reverse side so the zari stays bright.
